Abernant
Abernant is a small historic farmstead in the parish of Llancarfan, situated within the rural landscape of the valley. By the 19th century it was one of the lesser agricultural holdings in the area, alongside the larger farms such as Llanvithyn and Garnllwyd. The landscape around Abernant has a much older history, however: archaeological evidence includes a prehistoric enclosure cropmark close to the farm, suggesting that this part of the Llancarfan valley has been occupied or used since prehistoric times. The wider area also contains evidence of medieval settlement, field systems and later agricultural activity.
By the 19th century Abernant Farm formed part of the characteristic pattern of dispersed farms and smallholdings that developed across Llancarfan. Farming remained the principal occupation, with the surrounding fields used for crops and livestock. A recollection published by the Llancarfan Society records that during the Second World War, when farmers were directed to increase food production, the 30-acre Abernant farm grew about five acres of wheat as well as oats. The same account gives an insight into the traditional working life of the farm and its importance within the local farming community.
