Bromwell

Bromwell is a small historic farmstead within the parish of Llancarfan, set within the agricultural landscape of the Nant Llancarfan valley. Although there appears to be relatively little surviving documentary material specifically about Bromwell itself, its history can be understood within the wider pattern of dispersed farms that developed around Llancarfan. By the 19th century, the valley was characterised by individual farms and smallholdings surrounded by enclosed fields, many of whose boundaries may preserve elements of the medieval agricultural landscape.

The area around Bromwell has a much longer history of settlement and farming. Llancarfan's landscape contains evidence of prehistoric activity, medieval cultivation and later agricultural improvement, while the present pattern of consolidated farm holdings was largely established by the mid-19th century. Bromwell would have formed part of this predominantly agricultural community, with farming and livestock providing the mainstay of rural life. Its setting is therefore significant not only for the history of the farm itself but also as part of the wider historic landscape of Llancarfan, which retains many features of its medieval and post-medieval agricultural past.
