Flaxland Fach
Flaxland Fach is an old farmstead in the hamlet of Walterston, within the historic parish of Llancarfan. The site has a long history: research by local historian John Cann indicates that a dwelling stood here from at least the 18th century, and possibly considerably earlier. Historic records give the names Flexeland and Flaxland Fach, while the property was shown as Flaxland Minor on 19th-century records. The present house replaced an earlier building in 1899, although the farmstead itself clearly has much deeper roots.
The ownership and occupants of Flaxland Fach can be traced through deeds and local records. In 1840, the property was owned by William Perkins and rented to Edward Thomas. In 1910, the owner, Elizabeth Harris, died, and in 1912 her daughter Ethel sold Flaxland Fach to Evan Sherrah for £1,067 10s. Sherrah subsequently sold it to Evan Rowlands in 1925. By 1939 Rowlands was recorded as a dairy farmer, with members of the Davies family assisting with the farm. The history of Flaxland Fach therefore provides a particularly good example of the small family farms that formed an important part of the agricultural landscape around Llancarfan and Walterston.
