Gowlog, Llancarfan
Gowlog is an old farmstead on the northern side of the Llancarfan valley, and its history is particularly interesting because the area around it preserves evidence of an earlier pattern of farming. Historic landscape research identifies Gowlog as an area where dispersed medieval or post-medieval holdings survived, with evidence suggesting that some of the irregular fields may represent older strip fields or later clearance and enclosure. By the 19th century, Gowlog was one of the smaller farm holdings on the margins of the larger farms such as Llanvithyn, Garnllwyd and Caemaen.
Gowlog continued as a working agricultural farm into the 20th century. A 1961 sale catalogue records Gowlog Farm together with Ty-to-Maen Farm, forming a combined holding of approximately 177 acres, occupied by farmer F. Rowlands from 1945. The catalogue also records improvements made to the farm, including the installation of mains water to three field troughs at Gowlog. Local recollections provide a more personal connection: families such as the Coles lived and worked at Gowlog during the first half of the 20th century, illustrating its continuing role within the farming community of Llancarfan
