Middle Hill
Middle Hill is one of the historic farms on the outskirts of Llancarfan and has long formed part of the agricultural landscape surrounding the village. Its history is closely connected with the farming community of Llancarfan, where small and medium-sized farms played an important role in sustaining the village. The farm is mentioned in 19th-century recollections of the area; Charles Deere, writing about his childhood memories of the Vale, recalled that James Burrows, who had come from Lyme Regis, Dorset, initially made his home at Middle Hill Farm, Llancarfan, where he worked as a labourer for local builders.
Middle Hill also has an important cultural connection with Edward Williams, better known as Iolo Morganwg, the celebrated Welsh antiquarian, poet and collector. The Llancarfan historical tradition records Edward Williams as having lived at Middle Hill and identifies him as one of the local poets who helped nurture the young Iolo's talents. Williams is buried in St Cadoc's Church, Llancarfan, where his memorial stone can still be seen. The farm therefore forms part of the wider story of Llancarfan as a centre of Welsh-language culture and local literary tradition, as well as being an important part of the area's agricultural history.
